How To Apply For Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) in Canada

This application manual can be used by a permanent resident who is outside Canada and does not own an authentic, permanent resident card to return to Canada. The permanent resident travel document is a provisional formal record ascertaining your status as a PR in Canada. It informs transportation firms that you can travel to Canada as a PR if you still need an authentic Permanent Resident card. You require a Permanent Resident Travel Document if:

  • You are a PR currently not within Canada and do not have an authentic, permanent resident card.
  • You intend to go on a trip to Canada by any general transporter, which includes a bus, plane, boat, or train. 
  • When returning to Canada, you must apply to continue or replace your permanent resident card.

Suppose you are going on a trip in a personal car, truck, or motorcycle you own, rent, or borrow. In that case, you can use your permanent resident card, permanent resident travel document, or other papers to come back to Canada. These papers are not authentic for trips to Canada:

  • Verification of permanent residence (IMM 5292 OR IMM 5688)
  • Record of Landing (IMM 1000)

People Not Allowed to Apply For a Permanent Resident Travel Document

  • Citizens of Canada
  • International citizens who do not own PR status
  • PR using an accurate permanent resident card in their custody
  • PR who desire to decline their PR status willingly.
  • Previous PR who have forfeited their permanent resident status

Requirements For PRTD Application

To make an application for a permanent residence travel document, you are required to:

  • Ascertain who you are.
  • Verify your PR status.
  • Satisfy the residency responsibilities of a PR. 

Use the record checklist (IMM 5644) to ensure you possess all the required documents. Forward the list with your request. 

Once a conclusion has been made on your request, you will obtain a message with directions on the ways and the places to present your accurate passport or trip documents, as it is required to include in your permanent residence travel document. Forward the photocopies of every identification and immigration paper, which includes your accurate passport or trip documents. You are not required to send the original copies since they will not be returned. 

Lawful Name Alteration

If you are a PR and altered your name outside of Canada, present: 

  • An international passport or other citizen permission documents that indicate your current name, 
  • A formal document connecting the old and current names.

Note: Immigration, Refugee. Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will provide a Permanent Resident Travel Document counterfoil according to the name on your passport. If you have altered your name overseas, the name on your international passport offered with your request should indicate the new name, and you must present the accompanying records above. 

Before Making an Application

This application can be used to make an application for a permanent resident travel document if you need an accurate permanent resident card to come back to Canada. The application for a permanent resident card can not be made while abroad. Whenever you obtain your permanent resident travel document, you can travel to Canada. Those Who Are Eligible

  • Be a PR not living in Canada

  • Not being in the custody of an accurate permanent resident card 
  • Satisfy the residency duties of a PR
  •  Not be a Canadian national
  • Not be a PR who desires to decline their permanent resident status willingly.
  • You need to have forfeited your permanent residency status.

Step One: Assemble Your Accompanying Documents

Use the Document Checklist (IMM 5644) to verify which documents are required. If you do not provide all the needed documents or the copies are unclear, your application may be sent back to you. Remember that you may request additional documents anytime while your application is processing. 

Step Two: Complete The Forms

You must complete this form online (Application for a Permanent Resident Card or PRTD (IMM 5444E). If this application can not be made online, attach your accessibility motives and complete your application by paper. 

Step Three: Pay Your Fees

You are required to pay a processing fee when making an application. You are required to include the payment receipt together with your application. The cost for processing will not be repaid when they have begun processing your request or if your application is denied. 

Step Four: Present Your Application

If you make your application online, present your request and every accompanying document via the PR portal.
