How to get Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR) in Canada

Confirmation of permanent residence is a document indicating your request for permanent residency in Canada has been accepted by Immigration, Refugee, and Citizenship Canada. Hence, it is not a permit or a travel paper. People or families using COPR are still required to conclude their procedures of becoming permanent residents and obtain their permanent resident cards.

When to Obtain Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR)

Canada candidates obtain Confirmation of Permanent Residence when they have applied for permanent residence via one of the immigration plans, which includes express entry, the provincial nominee program, and others. You must have presented your application online or via mail, made payment for every fee needed, and presented all the documents and information if required by IRCC.

If your request is approved, IRCC will forward you a welcome message with a guide on verifying your permanent residence online. You will be required to create an account on the IRCC website and present a duplicate of your passport or other travel papers, a picture of yourself, and your current address in Canada or overseas. Having accepted online, Immigration, Refugee, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will forward you an email with a Confirmation of Permanent Residence paper. You have to write it down and place it somewhere safe. You will use it later to conclude the procedures of becoming a permanent resident and obtain your card.

What to do When You Receive Your COPR

Those Outside Canada

To enter Canada, however, you also require a lawful visa or an eTA if you come from one of the qualified nations. After your permanent residency application is accepted outside Canada, you will have a Canadian visa stamped on your passport. When you arrive in Canada, you must show the border service agents your COPR documents and passport or other travel papers.

The official will review your documents and ask questions to ensure that you are who you say you are and are qualified. If everything goes well, the official will stamp your paperwork and receive you in Canada. Your Confirmation of Permanent Resident is valid until the date on it expires or until the date on your visa expires. Before your Confirmation of Permanent Resident finishes, try to visit Canada. If you can not use it before it expires, you will be required to explain to IRCC why you did not travel within the recommended time frame. You may be asked to apply again or obtain another Confirmation of Permanent Resident.

Those Inside Canada

There will be no point if you move out of Canada to conclude your arrival procedures. You can execute this on the website for the IRCC. You must present a duplicate of your Confirmation of Permanent Resident paper and an image of yourself. Immigration, Refugee, and Citizenship Canada will review your documents and verify that you are a permanent resident.

What to do Next

You will become permanent residents of Canada anytime you verify your permanent residence online or at the port of entry. This implies you can reside, get employed, study, and obtain health care and social services in Canada. You will also obtain a permanent resident card in the mail within 90 days of going to Canada as a permanent resident. Your PR card is a legal paper indicating who you are and your aim in Canada. You should keep it somewhere secured and carry it while traveling outside Canada. When you become a Canadian national, you obtain more liberties, such as being able to vote, run for office, and more.
